There was a time when the Far West had a stronger voice. Stories travelled slowly but they travelled well — through local newspapers, community yarns, pub conversations and the people who lived them. But over time, that voice became quieter. Publications disappeared, local journalism faded and eventually there was no longer a magazine dedicated to telling the stories of the entire Far West region — and there hadn’t been for a very long time.

Then came the demise of the local newspaper, leaving an even greater hole in the market and, more importantly, in the community itself. The stories were still there — powerful, funny, heartbreaking, inspiring stories — but many were going untold. We saw people doing extraordinary things in small towns and remote communities, artists creating in isolation, families carrying generations of history, and characters whose lives deserved to be documented before they disappeared into the dust of time.

That was the beginning of Rasp & Sturt.

Born from a deep love of the outback and the people who call it home, Rasp & Sturt was created to celebrate the Far West in a way that felt authentic, positive and visually striking. We didn’t want to chase headlines or focus only on bad news. We wanted to uncover the stories often never heard — the quiet achievers, the dreamers, the battlers, the bush characters and the hidden corners of outback Australia that deserve to be seen and remembered.
